"A coin is placed in the hand and the small knob on top of the bank is pressed upon which lowers the arm & opens the satchel to receive the coin." A very comical appearance is given to the face, as the lower jaw is balanced on pivots & is easily kept in motion, giving the appearance of talking.

This painted cast iron mechanical bank was made by the Shepard Hardware Co. Buffalo N.Y. Shepard made mechanical banks from  1882-1892.

"Shepard mechanical banks are of the highest quality with fine artistic paint jobs. However, no primer was used to prepare the metal for painting & so the paint has a tendency to chip easily" Reference: The Bank Book by Bill Norman p.52 figure 5370b

This figure has a brown face and red lips.  The locking coin trap (key included) is located on the back panel (see photo).

On the bottom plate it is stamped "PAT. JUNE 8, 1886"

The bank is in all original, working condition. There is no evident damage, repairs, repaint or replaced parts.
